Ski resort is first to register complete emissions inventory with The Climate Registry
(March 26, 2009 ? Alta, WY) The Climate Registry today announced Grand Targhee Resort became its first Member to have its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory registered in its online reporting tool, the Climate Registry Information System (CRIS), and achieve the status of Climate Registered. By achieving this milestone, Grand Targhee Resort is the first organization in North America to officially establish a Registry-recognized baseline for its carbon footprint, which it can use to accurately and comprehensively manage its emissions.
The Climate Registry sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report GHG emissions. For an emissions report to be accepted by The Registry and labeled as Climate Registered, it must include applicable data on all six internationally-recognized GHGs for all North American locations. The data must be reported according to the comprehensive and rigorous standards established in The Registry?s General Reporting Protocol (GRP) and verified by an independent, third-party Verification Body that is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and recognized by The Registry. With consultation from The Brendle Group, Grand Targhee Resort reported its 2007 emissions inventory. The inventory was verified by Advanced Waste Management, which was the first Verification Body to verify an emissions inventory with The Climate Registry. The detailed report and summary can be viewed here
Grand Targhee Resort, which is located on the western slope of the Teton Mountains in Wyoming and receives 500 inches of snow annually, elected to voluntarily report its emissions inventory with The Climate Registry for several reasons. As a ski operation that depends on the environment for the success of its business, it is very concerned about climate change. It also is interested in opportunities to engage hundreds of thousands of winter sports enthusiasts each year through education and example.
?The Climate Registry?s protocol for measuring greenhouse gases ensures a level of accuracy and transparency that far exceeds all other tools we evaluated. Registering our first inventory was a huge success, but we are much more excited about the potential ripple effect. We now have the opportunity to extend our knowledge and activities out to our customers and to also accurately manage our impact on the environment. We have a long way to go toward reducing our environmental impacts, but understanding precisely what those impacts are is essential to effectively mitigating them,? said Christina Thomure, Director of Sustainable Operations, Grand Targhee Resort.
?We are extremely pleased and honored to congratulate Grand Targhee Resort as the first organization to register its emissions inventory with us and earn the status of Climate Registered. This exemplifies true environmental leadership and commitment towards addressing climate change. Many organizations are establishing goals to be carbon neutral and implementing environmental initiatives, but the organizations that take climate change seriously will be able to report and manage their emissions inventories with accuracy and according to recognized standards,? said Diane Wittenberg, Executive Director, The Climate Registry.
The Climate Registry is a nonprofit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations that sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions into a single registry. The Registry supports both voluntary and mandatory reporting programs and provides comprehensive, accurate data to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
