Summer Naturalist & Interpretive Tours

Grand Targhee Resort offers Naturalist guided and self-guided discovered naturalist interpretive hikes for the young at heart and curious of mind. Participants will learn about the history of Grand Targhee Resort, forest and wildlife ecology, and the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Tours are led by a Resort Naturalists.  Guests of all ages and abilities are welcome. This summer marks the 13th year we have offered Naturalist services to our guests in partnership with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

Free Naturalist Programs

Nature At Noon

Summit Nature Center-CLOSED Monday - Thursday starting September 9, 2013.

Open Friday - Sunday 10:30am-4:30pm - weather permitting.

Join us at the observation platform just north off the top of the Dreamcatcher scenic chairlift for our Nature at Noon free naturalist led discussion and short hike on the Teton View Nature trail. Learn how oceans, volcanoes and glaciers sculpted the surrounding landscape, and how the creatures and flora adapt to living in the alpine environment.  Approximately one hour in length and is an easy to moderate journey of discovery exploring the wildflowers, wildlife, and geology of the Tetons.


Naturalist Guided Hiking Tours

Naturalist guided hikes that venture beyond the Summit Nature Center’s surroundings to explore the Targhee landscape in depth. Sign-up at the Grand Targhee Activity Center.

Guided Hiking Tours available twice a day on weekends, departing from the Summit Nature Center. Sign up with the Activity Center 307-353-2300 ext.1355

  • Mary’s Saddle Guided Hike – Join our Resort Naturalist for a two hour hike to the Mary’s Saddle south of the Fred’s Mountain summit. We will then hike back to the summit and ride the scenic chairlift back to the base. Fees are $20pp ages 12 & up, departs at 10:30pm from the top of the lift.
  • Bannock Trail Guided Hike - Join our Resort Naturalist for a three hour guided hike from the summit of Fred’s Mountain down to the base using our Bannock Trail.  Fees are $30pp ages 12 & up, departs at 1:30pm from the top of the lift.

Evening Naturalist Program - Friday Evenings at 7:00pm

For family fun in the evening the Friday night Naturalist Program is a real treat. Grand Targhee is the perfect setting to enjoy a tranquil evening while participating in an Evening Nature Walk. Join our Naturalist for an evening stroll through the trails near the base area, as we’ll listen to birds, identify wildflowers, and discuss the unique habitat at Grand Targhee.

Led by Brigid Sinram, our Resort Naturalist and NAI Certified Interpretive Guide, this 60 minute gentle walk in the woods is great for the whole family. Every guided walk is geared towards enjoying the journey at a pleasant pace, using all of your senses to explore nature in a new way.

Meet the Naturalist in front of the Teewinot Lodge at 7:00pm. This is a FREE Nature program and no registration required.

Self Discovery Nature Trails

Grand View Nature Trail

This Fred's Mtn/Grand View Nature Trail begins on the observation deck just a short walk north from the summit of the Dreamcatcher scenic chairlift. After reading the educational panels on the observation deck, follow a rocky path south along Fred’s Mountain summit ridge as it meanders through alpine plants and world class views of the Grand Tetons. The trail ends at the Summit Nature Center.

Teewinot Nature Trail

The Teewinot Nature Trail is a short self-guided interpretive trail that meanders through Aspen groves, old growth Douglas Fir trees, and wildflower meadows. This self-guided interpretive trail begins near the Teewinot lodge and guides you to discover local ecology with 12 points of interest. You will discover where red squirrels eat their meals as you walk among rocks that were transported by glaciers to that very trail.
