Federal Lands
Many ski resorts in the west are located on public lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Grand Targhee Resort is one such ski area that has a nearly forty year history of partnership with the Forest Service in providing recreation to visitors of the local National Forest. Grand Targhee’s journey started as a partnership with the Forest Service to bring winter business to a growing economic community. Since December of 1969, when Grand Targhee opened, the resort has been an economic boost to Teton Valley and a host to hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
Our partnership with the U.S. Forest Service has grown over the years to embrace four season activities that include horseback riding, wildflower hikes, winter ecology snowshoe hikes, mountain bike riding, backcountry tours, interpretive evening programs and more. Our full time resort naturalist shares the joys of nature with guests not only of Grand Targhee Resort but also visitors to the National Forest through a partnership with the local ranger district.
In 2001, Grand Targhee Resort joined 70 other ski areas to embrace an Environmental Charter that provoked us as an industry to live up to our responsibility to be good stewards of the land and the environment. Today, we have taken an even greater responsibility by saying as a user of National Forest lands that we accept a responsibility not only for our actions today but are looking to a sustainable future. We crafted our Sustainability Charter looking at how we can operate our business and take positive steps to insure that future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty and the joy of the Tetons.
