Ben Winship & Thomas Sneed with special guests Tom Marshall
Ben Winship and Thomas Sneed share a unique friendship founded in their love of music. They both have had distinguished careers in American folk music. Their duet gigs feature a variety of styles and instruments formed from many nights of late night picking sessions in Teton Valley. The setlists for apres ski can cover a variety of songs and tunes from bluegrass, old-time, folk, country, early jazz and Americana fusions. Winship has graced the trap bar stage many times over the last few decades and is the founder of the Targhee Music Camp.
Winship is a self-made musician. His routine is a constantly shifting mix of performing, recording, engineering and teaching. Mandolin is Ben’s primary ax, but he is also a well respected songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist.
Winship’s version of string band music is an exploration of crossroads; where raw meets refined, original meets traditional, weird meets familiar, organized meets free ranging. The Boston Globe called his sound “A further leap from traditional hill country music.” While Tim O’Brien refers to him as “One of the acoustic music scene’s best writers.”
Over the past 25 years, gigs have taken him everywhere from Hawaii to Shetland, Anchorage to Equator, with appearances along the way at places like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, A Prairie Home Companion and the Vancouver Folk Festival.
Thomas Sneed is a mandolinist and musical historian. He has performed at numerous musical festivals and venues including the Grand Old Opry, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Merlefest, the Kennedy Center and the "Down From the Mountain Tour," which featured music from the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou." His mandolin playing was featured in the motion picture "Cold Mountain." He has worked with the Center for Appalachian Studies in Tennessee collecting oral histories with musicians and is currently the director of the Targhee Music Camp.
