Grand Targhee Resort NUE Race a Success
(Alta, WY – August 9, 2011) -- Grand Targhee racers are thrilled with the NUE Series Pierre’s Hole 50/100 Race Course. Jeff Schalk rides away with victory and a new course record while Amanda Carey dominates women’s open division.
Saturday August 6th, Grand Targhee Resort hosted the eighth race on the National Ultra Endurance series. Starting at 8,000 feet and tucked in the shadows of the picturesque Grand Tetons, race organizers Troy Barry and Andy Williams carved out 25 miles of track that offers sections for every type of rider’s enjoyment. The course offered everything from singletrack climbing to Lightening Ridge, the endless singletrack descending to Mill Creek, the asphalt climb under the shadow of the Tetons along Ski Hill Road, some rolling single track in Rick's Basin and finally the two track in Bustle and Dry Creek, all in Grand Targhee’s back yard. With almost 4,000 feet of climbing per lap, it was a challenging course, yet the 241 riders enjoyed the beauty of wildflowers in the shadows of the Tetons throughout the day.
With rain the Sunday and Thursday leading up to the competition and cool, sunny skies the day of, riders were welcomed by perfect race-day conditions at the start line. The course was tacky and dust-free while clear skies and incredible views of the Teton peaks treated riders throughout the 100 and 50-mile competitions.
Riders travelled from across the country from as far away as Maine and Hawaii, each rider contributing to the overall personality and excitement of the event, creating a party-like atmosphere for all to enjoy. Race organizers were extremely pleased with the positive responses from each rider upon completion of the race. Organizers handed out finishers mugs at the finish line and on several occasions were received with hugs and tears from the emotionally exhausted, but elated competitors (many of whom were first time 100-miler competitors).
Riders reported, upon completion of the ride, that the Pierre’s Hole 50/100 at Grand Targhee Resort is the most challenging course on the circuit thus far, even more so than the Breckenridge and Butte 100s, which historically have been considered the toughest races on the circuit.
A huge thank you to all of Pierre’s Hole 50/100 sponsors NoTubes, Hammer and Egron, in addition to Smith Optics, Mountain Khakis, Kenda, Skull Candy, Forage, Aspen Wellness, Just Fruit, Niner, Wobblenaught and TVTAP for really stepping up this year. Thank you to all the race-day volunteers who’s support allowed organizers to focus on event logistics and ensuring that the race went off without a hitch. Finally, thank you to Habitat and Hoback Sports for setting up mechanical tents, allowing competitors access to mechanics and tools onsite.
