Winter Wilderness Stewardship Project and CLIF Bar’s Day of Action helping to Protect the Places we Play

In celebration of the Winter Wilderness Stewardship partnership between Winter Wildlands Alliance and the US Forest Service, we are thrilled to announce CLIF Bar's Day of Action.  Winter Wildlands Alliance, a national nonprofit organization working to protect winter ecosystems and to ensure opportunities for backcountry skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and other non-motorized winter activities, will be hosting their first annual project sponsored by CLIF Bar.  WWA along with the USFS will be marking wilderness boundaries and placing winter educational kiosk signs at trailheads to create a better backcountry experience for all winter travelers.

Winter Wildlands Alliance and the USFS has developed this unique program called the Winter Wilderness Stewardship Project that aims to educate and engage a local constituency in wilderness stewardship for Wyoming’s Jedediah Smith Wilderness and Winegar Hole Wilderness Areas.  WWA and the USFS hope to utilize this project as a template for better winter management of wilderness areas throughout the country.

Our CLIF Bar Day of Action will take place on Oct 1, 2011. We invite and encourage you, your family and your friends to come out and enjoy a great day with other adventurers as we work to Protect the Places we Play.

You have the option of being at one of three work sites:

1. Winegar Hole Wilderness - near Island Park, Idaho:

At this work site you will dig holes and set boundary markers in the Winegar Hole Wilderness. The work site is just a few yards off the main road.

2. Jedediah Smith Wilderness - near Driggs, Idaho:

This work party will be hiking into the "Jed" Wilderness to dig holes and set boundary markers. It is a 2-hour hike into the work site and a 2-hour hike out.

3. Glory Peak - off Teton Pass: For the heartier folks; Volunteers will be placing a winter kiosk sign on Glory Peak. As a group, you will hike in a 20 x 24 inch sign and 2 lodge poles.  Hikers will be carrying 5-7 pounds of concrete for footings.  Volunteers should expect a 2-3 hour hike in.

Volunteers can expect to work 8 hours, but you MUST REGISTER for the event to receive a delicious brown bag lunch, CLIF Bars, and High-Fives. In addition, every volunteer will receive a lift ticket voucher to Grand Targhee Resort and a Gift Card from our friend at Mountain Khakis. All tools and materials will be provided.

We look forward to you joining us for a day in the dirt!
