The International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) was established in 1996 by freeskiing pioneer Shane McConkey. Freeskiing in the 1990s was described as different specifications of the alpine ski sport such as big mountain, slope-style, half-pipe, big air, and skier-cross. McConkey believed that the sports in freeskiing needed an athlete driven governing body unlike FIS is to ski racing. Since then, the sport of freeskiing has grown rapidly and each of the disciplines have evolved into strong individual sports. Today IFSA is centered on junior and adult big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding competitions.
The mission of the IFSA, now the International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association, is to enhance the sport of competitive big mountain freeriding by creating a uniform set of guidelines to ensure consistent and credible competition.
