2016 Pierre’s Hole Race Results
(Alta, WY –August 8, 2016) The 2016 Pierre’s Hole 50/100 Mountain Bike Race took place on Saturday, August 6, 2016. Over 370 athletes from across North America arrived at Grand Targhee Resort to compete in this stop on the National Utra Endurance Series. Peter Sagan, a Slovak professional road and mountain bike athlete, made a stop to compete in the 50km Open Men’s Division. Peter is the current road world champion and 5 time green jersey winner in the Tour de France.
Friday night brought in much-needed rain to make for hero dirt racing conditions. The 100-mile race started ay 7:00am with a chill in the air. The 100km classes started at 8:10am and the 50km classes starting at 8:40am. The Grand Loop Course started out with a 29.5-mile-long first lap and an estimated 4,019 fee of climbing. Lap 2 and 3 consisted of 34 miles and an estimated 4,241 feet of climbing per lap.
Some incredible stories surfaced as the top athletes crossed the finish line. 100km Mens’ open winner and 3rd win on the NUE Marathon Series, Alex Pond, took a bad spill over the handlebars that left him with a broken seat and a battle wound. A little duct tape was used to get him back and riding and he was able to complete the lap and second lap with a broken seat. This is truly a sign of dedication from these athletes. 100-mile winner Jeremiah Bishop suffered a crash and a torn side wall on the final decent, but with a sufficient lead he was still able to capture the win. Jeremiah is a two time national mountain bike champion.
Andy Williams, event manager and trail builder for the resort, said “This was an incredible event. From the timing of the rain, all the athletes, and one of the largest Pierre’s Hole races, we could not have asked for better conditions. Thank you to all the athletes who came out to participate. We hope you enjoyed the new trails and the course and hope to see you again next summer.”
The 2017 Pierre’s Hole 50/100 MTB Race is scheduled for Saturday, August 5, 2017.
