Celebrate Global Fat Bike Day at the Nation’s First Resort Trail System!

First in the Nation

With Global Fat Bike Day quickly approaching, you’ve surely heard the buzz surrounding the sport. If the activity is news to you, get excited because you’re about to unlock the key to biking all year long.

Grand Targhee was the first resort in the United States to integrate fat biking into our winter activities, ensuring biking in the Tetons as a year round sport. Currently, our winter trail system offers 15km of groomed nordic track and over 7 miles of singletrack for bikers and snowshoers to enjoy. This Saturday, December 2nd, we’ll celebrate Global Fat Bike Day, also known as GFBD, where bikers from all over the country and beyond gather together and join in on the fun. Acquiring a bike for the day comes easy, with demos available at both Teton Mountain Outfitters (located at The Resort) and Habitat (located on North Main Street in Driggs).

What’s it like?

Eager to create our own experience for Global Fat Bike Day, we hit the trails today with Andy Williams, Grand Targhee’s Special Events/Trails Manager and Fat Bike guru. We were happy to see what the mountain’s network of winter trails had in store for us. Hardpacked, groomed single track, and 5″ balloon tires aided in traction and flotation, while the bluebird morning made the surrounding snow radiate sparkles of light. We cruised through The Jolly Green Giant Loop, named for the monstrous Douglas Fir trees you encounter throughout the ride, and it was in glorious condition. Aspen trees lined the latter end of the trail; and spectacular views of the valley were waiting as a visual feast at the apex of the loop.

Go Ahead, Stay Awhile…

What better place to spend the GFBD than at the first mountain resort in the nation to offer fat biking! It’s also a perfect time to make a trip out of it, because when you book three nights of lodging with The Resort you get the fourth night free. Join fat bikers from far and wide as the community comes together at Grand Targhee, for a day dedicated to exploring all the beauty winter has to offer.

Fat Bike Races on The Mountain

If you can’t make it for Global Fat Bike Day, or think sharing in the excitement from the sidelines sounds more appealing, head up the hill on December 9th to Grand Targhee’s first Fat Bike Race of the season. The event will be held from 8:30am to 4:00pm, and will offer both a 7 mile and 14 mile race length option. Free riding is also available on the day of the race for those that aren’t in it for the speed. There is fun to be had, mountain glory to be found, and race swag to be acquired! You don’t want to miss the magic.

Emily joined Grand Targhee’s team after making the decision to move across the country in search of a place where she’d be able to fuse her passion, work, and love for the mountains into one. She’s decided, life at Targhee definitely beats the rat race she came from.
