Terrain Park Update – 1.18
Sweetwater Terrain Park
What to look forward to; Sweetwater terrain park will be closed Wednesday and Thursday this coming week, Jan. 23-24th, for a complete rebuild. While the terrain park crew keeps its plans under lock and key in the dank, cave-like depths of the park shack, where all things terrain park are forged, they did let a few subtle hints slip as to maintain the stoke. Here’s a little morsel; the jump line will remain in place, while a whole new collection of features will be put in around the jumps. New rails/boxes that have not yet been pulled from the bottom of Targhee’s snowpack will, potentially, make their first appearance this next week!
Until then, expect the terrain park to be somewhat of a powder park; with large amounts of snow expected from this upcoming series of storms, the features in the park will continually be covered by a smooth, soft layer of powder as it falls throughout the day. Consider it additional cushioning for the landings!
North Pole Terrain Park
What to look forward to; The North Pole terrain park will remain mostly the same through the next week. The Critics’ choice award goes to the “Inception-Volcano”, the wackiest, yet most-rewarding, feature in the North Pole park. Essentially, it’s a small, hitable-from-all-sides stepup into a bowl or, more accurately, the crater of a snow volcano. The description does not do it justice; it is a feature better ridden than described, so tips up and drop into North Pole where the waves are always firing!
Freestyle season is comin' in hot! Prepare for Grand Targhee's terrain Park and freestyle events!
In addition to both terrain parks at Grand Targhee, the terrain park crew is instrumental in planning and crafting features for special events and comps on the mountain. For instance, just this last weekend, the guys put together a quarterpipe for Targhee’s 30 Year Snowboard Reunion Party. What makes this more impressive was the pipe wall was cut with just a snowcat and by hand, no pipe-cutting apparatus involved and, boy, did the event turn out to be a hoot- and-a-half!
Now that we’re well into the New Year with a decent snowpack, freestyle event season is comin’ in hot! Here are several events/comps that happen either in the terrain parks or not, but still remain loyal to the spirit of doing spins, grabs, grinds, and inverts.
2/22- USASA Rail Jam
2/23- USASA Slopestyle Comp.
3/8 – Terrain Park Takeover/ Sweetwater Park is closed off and competitors are allowed to create their own line through the entire park.
3/16 – Shred the Love/ The Grand Targhee terrain park crew will build some special features in conjunction with other mountain-wide events; teaming up with Boarding for Breast Cancer to raise funds for breast cancer education, prevention, and survivorship programs.
3/30 – 2nd Annual Teton Surf Classic/ Surf’s up and a bunch of tasty waves and good vibes are provided for the boarder crowd in the North Pole terrain park.
4/6 – Sick Trick Comp./ Wrapping up spring-skiing sessions in the best way possible, jumps will be built outside the Trap deck where the best costumes and “sickest” tricks will handsomely rewarded.
Some shots from the Grand Targhee 30 Year Snowboard Reunion quarterpipe jam. Another fine creation compliments of the the terrain park crew.
