Dogs at Grand Targhee

General Guidelines

Grand Targhee is a dog-friendly resort, but responsible pet ownership is key to keeping our mountain experience safe and enjoyable for all guests, both human and canine. Please read and follow the policies below when visiting with your dog during the summer biking season.

Leash Requirements

  • Leashes are mandatory in all resort-controlled areas, including the base area, parking lots, and any high-traffic zones.
  • Even if your dog is well-trained, keeping them leashed helps prevent unexpected interactions with other guests, children, and wildlife.

Trail Access: Know Where Dogs Are Allowed

  • Dogs are NOT allowed on any Downhill (DH) mountain bike trails.
    • These trails are high-speed, single-direction, and not safe for pedestrian or canine traffic.
  • Dogs are welcome on select multi-use and hiking trails—please check posted trail signage or ask a Trail Ambassador to confirm which routes are dog-friendly on any given day.
  • If you're riding a bike, please do not take your dog with you unless it's on a permitted, non-DH trail where dogs are explicitly allowed.

Waste Disposal: Clean Up After Your Pup

  • Always carry waste bags and dispose of your dog's waste in proper trash receptacles.
  • Waste stations are available near the base area—please use them.
  • Help us protect the natural beauty of our mountain environment and reduce trail damage by keeping it clean for all trail users.

Pet Safety & Heat Awareness

  • Never leave pets unattended in your vehicle, especially on warm days. Mountain air can be deceiving, and cars heat up quickly, even at elevation.
  • Ensure your dog stays hydrated and is not overexerted, particularly on hot afternoons or high-altitude hikes.

Chairlift Policy

  • Dogs are not allowed on the chairlift at any time, including service animals.
  • The only exception is for Grand Targhee’s professionally trained patrol dogs during approved evacuation or patrol operations.
  • Please plan accordingly if you’re heading up the mountain and cannot leave your pet safely with a companion at the base.

The resort is currently closed and will reopen on June 13th.
