Mountain Bike Regulations and Safety

Skill Level Awareness

  • Ride trails that match your experience, fitness, and equipment.
  • Riders are encouraged to progress gradually, starting with easier terrain before advancing to more technical lines.
  • Trail Progression System Coming Soon: Stay tuned for our Targhee-specific trail progression guide to help you navigate appropriate trails as your skills improve.

Trail Etiquette

  • Obey all trail signage and posted warnings.
  • Yield appropriately: Uphill riders always have the right of way on shared trails.
  • Never stop in the middle of a trail, especially in blind corners or narrow sections—pull off to the side when taking breaks or checking gear.

Lift Access Requirements

  • Only approved mountain bikes are allowed on lifts.
  • E-bikes, fat bikes, or certain kids' bikes may not be compatible with our lift system. Please consult with our lift staff.
  • All gear is subject to inspection before loading.

See Lift Safety page for more info

Waivers & Rider Responsibility

  • All riders must sign a liability waiver before accessing the bike park.
  • Riders under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
  • By riding, you accept the inherent risks involved with mountain biking and agree to follow posted rules and resort staff guidance.

Trail Closures & Maintenance Areas

  • Trails may close due to maintenance, weather, or safety concerns.
  • Never enter closed areas or cross into restricted zones—violators may lose riding privileges.
  • Trail status is updated regularly; check our Trail Report before you ride.

Mandatory Helmet Rule

  • Helmets are required for all riders—no helmet, no ride.
  • Full-face helmets are strongly recommended for downhill and technical terrain.

E-Bike Policy

  • E-bikes are not allowed on lifts unless the rider has a documented disability or adaptive riding need.
  • Approved adaptive riders must check in with Patrol and Lift Operators prior to lift loading.

Pre-Ride Checklist

Before every ride, take a few minutes to inspect your equipment. A well-maintained bike is a safer bike.

Helmet Fit

  • Use a certified bike helmet that fits snugly.
  • Consider a full-face helmet for aggressive terrain or high-speed trails.

Brakes

  • Test both front and rear brakes.
  • Check for firm lever pressure—no mushy or unresponsive brakes.

Tire Pressure

  • Inflate tires to the recommended PSI for your weight and terrain.
  • Inspect for punctures, worn tread, or cracks.

Suspension

  • Adjust air pressure in your fork and rear shock for your weight and riding style.
  • Confirm that rebound and compression settings are dialed in properly.

Drivetrain

  • Ensure chain, derailleur, and shifters move smoothly.
  • Lubricate the chain if it appears dry or sounds noisy.

Bolts & Axles

  • Check that stem, handlebars, seatpost, pedals, and axle skewers are tight and secure.

Protective Gear

  • Wear gloves, knee and elbow pads, and protective eyewear.
  • Body armor is strongly encouraged for lift-accessed or downhill riding.

Navigation Tools

  • Study the trail map and choose routes appropriate for your skill.
  • Carry a GPS device or phone with a trail app if heading into remote areas.

Hydration & Snacks

  • Pack plenty of water, especially on warm or high-mileage days.
  • Bring quick calories (bars, gels, fruit) to stay energized.

Emergency Kit

  • Carry a multi-tool, tire levers, patch kit or tube, and a mini-pump or CO₂ inflator.
